Based on the article “Development of a tool to assess the impact of changes in anaesthesia staff assignments on billing compliance, margins and costs of anaesthesia services” published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bja.2024.05.032), this anaesthesia margin-cost estimation tool considers institution-specific parameters to test whether changes in the anaesthesia staff model would benefit other institutions with different anaesthesia provider salary levels, fringe benefit costs as well as hourly overtime costs, and commercial payer mixes. Further, the tool includes the annual case volume, the number and type of new anaesthesia providers hired, and the reduction in overtime for anaesthesia providers.
To increase the generalisability of the model, we also included conversion factors for Medicare and commercial payers, the institution’s payer mix, and the increase in billable units.
This online tool can be used to examine the associations with margins or costs in hospital-specific settings, which substantially depend on the institutional payer mix and compensation levels.
